Bioengineering Day, April 11th 2008

A Brief History of the Event
The 1st Annual Bioengineering Quiz Bowl, founded by UCSD Bioengineering undergraduate Anish Jina, took place on April 7th, 2006. This event began a tradition in the UCSD Department of Bioengineering to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the bioengineering community.
Since then this tradition has expanded into Bioengineering Day, a full-day of events consisting of a bioengineering poster exposition, alumni and industry panels, keynote speeches by distinguished alumni, and, of course, the Bioengineering Quiz Bowl. In 2007 UCSD BMES hosted the first annual Bioengineering Day.
Bioengineering Day 2008
The 2nd Annual Bioengineering Day promises to be even more fulfilling. The idea behind this year’s Bioengineering Day is to focus upon bioengineering as an interdisciplinary field that represents the synthesis of myriad areas of study as well as the many career possibilities associated with a bioengineering background. We hope to establish diversity in engineering by involving individuals of various related expertise and by interacting with those who have overstepped the traditional boundaries of bioengineering.

Poster Expo
BMES will be hosting a poster session and competition in conjunction with Bioengineering Day highlighting undergraduate student research, and we are looking for poster submissions. Any students performing research are encouraged to submit their projects. The posters will be judged by faculty members and industry representatives.

3rd Annual Bioengineering Quiz Bowl
The Bioengineering Quiz Bowl is an academic competition for bioengineers to show off their diverse knowledge and is the culminating event of the 2nd Annual Bioengineering Day. To be eligible for competition in the Quiz Bowl, bioengineering undergraduates must form a team of four members and take a qualification test. The four teams with the highest scores on the test will face off against each other in the 3rd Annual BQB, an elimination-style tournament. The team that is able to beat all the other student teams will have the opportunity to challenge a special team comprised of an industry representative, bioengineering faculty, grad student and alumni.
Thank you to all those who participated in the preliminary round, and congratulations to those that will be officially competing in the BQB!
—BENGers: Michael Salvatore, Arun Ganti, Vic Constaninescu, Kunal Sukhija

Networking Workshop
The networking workshop will serve as an outlet for students to develop interpersonal skills. Students will work on developing effective networking skills as well as professionalism.
Handshakes, Eye Contact & Small Talk: How to Network Effectively as a Student at Social and Professional Functions.
If you feel uncomfortable networking at conferences, professional meetings or job networking events, this interactive session is for you! This fun and practical workshop uses role-play to provide useful strategies and etiquette on how to enter and exit conversations, engage in small talk, and speak about your academic, research and career interests with colleagues in your professional community.
